Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial

The American War Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten is the only American war cemetery in the Netherlands. Buried here are 8,288 American soldiers from the Second World War, many of whom died during Operation Market Garden in September 1944 or during the Allied advance into Nazi Germany. Among those buried at this cemetery are six recipients of the Medal of Honour, the highest military decoration for bravery in the United States, and four women. Major General Maurice Rose, commander of the 3rd Armoured Division, is the highest-ranking person buried in this cemetery. In addition to those who rest here, the names of 1,722 missing soldiers are listed on the Walls of the Missing.

Since 1945, the graves of the soldiers buried here have been adopted by grateful citizens. If you would like to know more about the establishment of the cemetery, please visit the Akkers van Margraten website. More information and photos can also be found on the American Battle Monuments Commission website.

In close collaboration with the American Battle Monuments Commission, the Fields of Honor Foundation organises the biennial tribute The Faces of Margraten at the cemetery. Every two years, volunteers come to the cemetery to decorate the graves and names on the Walls of the Missing with personal photographs of the soldiers, giving their names a face. This takes place in the first week of May, when the Netherlands celebrates its own Memorial Day. Learn more about this solemn tribute here.

The cemetery is open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on 25 December and 1 January. The visiting address of the cemetery is American Cemetery 1 in Margraten, the Netherlands. Click here to contact the cemetery.
